Albert William Marsh was born on 2nd November 1884 (school register) (Thingoe Q4-1884 4A:664A), son of William and Sarah MARSH (née GARROD).

He was admitted to Culford Voluntary School on 1st July 1889, leaving on 10th July 1906.

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Culford with his father William MARSH [52] farm labourer born Wordwell; his mother Sarah [46] born Tibenham; brothers Herbert C [14] and Frederick W [12] both farm labourers born Culford; sister Julia A [9] born Culford.

1901 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Cottages, Culford, with his parents; brothers Herbert and Frederick, both farm labourers; sisters Edith [27] and Julia. Edith's whereabouts in 1891 is unknown.

1911 census...Aged 26, a domestic gardener, he was in Culford with his widower father and sister Edith. His mother had died in 1901.

The claimant on the pension card is his sister Edith E MARSH of Culford


He enlisted in Ingham. His age on CWGC (39) is an error that was corrected for his headstone.

The battalion were in trenches at St Eloi. One map reference puts them in the present town centre. Part of the trench line was still held by the Germans and a bombing party was sent to clear them out but a barricade and heavy machine gun fire foiled them. Casualties on the 30th were 9 killed.
